The Language Unit is a Local Authority provision that is based at this school. The unit caters for a small group of Key Stage 1 pupils who have a specific receptive language difficulty. The pupils who attend the Language Unit, full time, are drawn from across the authority. They follow the National Curriculum and have the benefit of support and input from a Speech and Language Therapist who is part of the Language Unit team. This team has two further members, a Teacher and an HLTA. The unit is further supported by an Educational Psychologist. Every pupil has a statement of Special Educational Need.

The pupil’s curriculum is planned around the language skills and concepts that they need to learn. Time is allocated for specific language learning. In this way the pupils are supported whilst they learn basic language skills and whilst also gaining the curriculum skills that they will need when they finally leave the unit. Pupils are on the role of the school, wear the school uniform and become fully involved in school activities. Opportunities are created for them to integrate into the school, to make friendships and to gradually become more involved in learning alongside their peer group as their language skills develop.
